Columbia Children’s Arboretum

27.18 acres
10040 NE 6th Drive
Columbia Children’s Arboretum brochure, 4-page PDF

One of two arboretums in Portland, CCA is classified as a “natural area” by PP&R and has a history of being a focal point for natural area educational events. The Park served as an environmental classroom for Portland Public Schools and once included an organic garden area and orchard designed and maintained by school children. School children wrote letters to governors of all 50 states requesting a tree that could be planted in the Arboretum. All 50 states sent trees and the collection is still maintained by volunteers and Friends of Trees.

The very first Natural Resources Management Plan was done in 1988 by the city and it has guided the development and environmental activities for the Arboretum. The CCA was officially acquired by Portland Parks and Recreation from the Portland School District in 1999 and a Management Plan was completed in 2004. The area furthest from Sixth Ave is a natural area where indigenous plants and wildlife thrive in an area that includes an open meadow and wetlands pond. The park is home to a Portland Heritage Tree, a 76ft Japanese red pine.
